The ‘Tools’ of the Left to Prevent Liberty
This morning, reports are circulating that former President Carter referred to the protesters of ‘big government’ and President Obama as being primarily driven by racism. Thus making a link between everyone who is in disagreement with the expanse of government as being a white supremacist racist. As a conservative, it was easy for me to immediately identify Carter’s lunacy, but it baffled me that many Americans quickly agree with our nations ‘worst president’ (and ex-president) without any proof into this matter…
I’ve come to realize that this is because President Carter used one of the many ‘tools’ of the left wing to attempt to discredit those who wish to secure individual liberty and put limits on government expansion. These ‘tools’ almost always use a ‘straw man‘ technique where the issues being addressed are never brought forth as objects of debate. Instead of debating the benefits of following the Constitution and preventing the government from expansive control and debt, the left attempts to quiet the opposition by labeling them as ‘Racist’. Before I discuss these tools in detail (I will only discuss 3), I first want to point out the goal of the left, so we are all on the same page.
Mr. Friedman of the NYT reveals their belief very clearly in the quote below…
One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century…. – New York Times Columnist Tom Friedman
It is clear to me that the goal of the Democrat’s left wing is to circumvent the rule of law in the Constitution and create a massive government state that has control over our lives, our property, and the market. This is clear to me through their actions, speeches, laws, organizations, and plain beliefs. They believe that their ‘elite’ wisdom is superior to the founders of our country, the citizen, the parent, and the individual. Thus in their minds individual liberty is dangerous to their agenda, and ‘the people’ must be controlled by the so-called wisdom of the ‘elitists’ in big government.
To prevent this expansion of individual liberty as defined by the Constitution as restraints on the branches of the federal government, they circumvent the Constitution by creating laws that continue to transfer freedom and property of the individual to the State. Their designs are many, but all their agendas eventually lead to unconstitutional laws and progressive taxation to move all power and wealth to the government. You will notice this by their belief that the answer to every problem in America is more government, more taxes, and more debt. It is never individual responsibility and liberty. For this we call them ‘Statists’. Some may call them Marxists or even Communists, (as I have) which would also be legitimate at times. I’ve come to realize that true left-wingers know they are ‘Statists’ and desire nothing more than a totalitarian rule by the left wing over the citizens.
Tools of the Left - Tool #1 – The Race Card
The first tool they use in the straw man technique is to label the opposition as ‘Racists’. The goal of this tool is to shut down debate and make the opposition to ‘Statism’ silent. If they can keep the opposition silent, then they can continue to push their agenda of more government control over our lives. This technique is also useful because it is quickly picked up on by the ignorant on the left who can’t even see the left-wing agenda, and just believe that all conservatives are crazy southerners, greedy capitalists, racists, and bigots. Thus they submit to more government control over their lives and become dependants (aka slaves) to those in power.
This tool was mentioned above and used by Jimmy Carter today, but it also currently being used by the main stream media, elected officials, and government funded organizations who are leaching off the taxpayer such as ACORN. As a libertarian/conservative, my hope is that America will wake up to what the ‘Statists’ are really trying to accomplish by labeling dissenters of ‘big government’ as racists. It is a pure ’straw man’ technique and a successful one at that in the past. But, just as the little boy who cried ‘wolf’ too many times, it is loosing it power and it appears Americans are waking up to it’s hypocrisy.
Tool # 2 – The ‘Stupid’ Label
The 2nd tool of the left is similar to the 1st, and it is to label any advocator of freedom and liberty as ’stupid’. This tool can also take the form of ‘idiot, lunatic, mentally ill, uneducated, etc’. It is also a straw man technique used by the left and it’s purpose is to deceive the listener so that they ignore the oppositions logic and position. It is one of the most favorite tools used by the left, and I experience it here on my blog often…
The best example I can show my readers is none other than Sarah Palin. Former Gov. Palin, with experience such as the Alaskan State Governor managing a 5.5 billion dollar budget and Commander and Chief of the Alaskan National Guard, in the mind of liberals was an ‘uneducated idiot’ and a ‘moron’ with not enough experience or intellect to even debate her positions on conservative principles openly. Meanwhile the ACORN ‘community organizer’ and US Senator for a whole 2 years (majority of which he spent campaigning to be President) who never so much as run a lemonade stand was highly intelligent, and the best fit for the President of the United States.
Even if you agree that President Obama is extremely intelligent (which I do believe he is) the point is that Sarah Palin was never given the opportunity to express her ‘limited government’ beliefs and the benefits of these beliefs to the American public. The main stream media immediately attacked like a ‘bull dog’ with every attempt to label her as ’stupid’ so that the public would not even listen to her beliefs on government and her goals of more freedom for the country. They pulled off the ’straw man’ technique with exceptional vigilance, and the American public remains ignorant because of it.
Tool #3 – Attack Capitalism
Probably the most often used attack by the left to push their agenda of more government control over our lives and the free-market economy (although it is anything but free) is based on ignorant idea that ‘capitalism’ is evil and is therefore bad for the people. Of course their reasoning is that because capitalism is so-called ‘evil’, then government is ‘good’ and therefore ‘men in government’ instead of the free-market containing competing businesses and individuals, should decide how profits and monetary funds will be distributed. (Nothing could be further from the truth)
Obviously, history has shown us that as government expands – freedom contracts, and as ‘freedom’ diminishes evil within government eventually prospers. Take for example that under the atheists Hitler, Lenin, and Stalin – both socialist and communist regimes – over 20 million people were tortured and murdered, with some estimates under Stalin that up to 60 million died due to famine and concentration camps. Yet, the left continues to push toward more government control and a one rule totalitarian regime. (Do I have to tell you where this will eventually lead?) It is evident that they do not see the eventual costs of such an agenda, or they are completely blinded by absolute power…
This tool of hypocrisy is also evident when the federal government interferes in a capitalistic free market through government regulation, and then blames capitalism and the market when it cannot operate due to the government interference. This is happening so regularly, that Americans have forgotten, or are completely ignorant to what a free market looks like.
A great example of this can be found in the recent housing crises. The cause of the crises can be pinned directly on the government sponsored Federal Reserve Bank inflating the money supply and the government backed mortgage entities of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, combined with laws introduced by Democrats to relax lending requirements (Community Reinvestment Act) on the mortgage market. The FED’s printing of money and the government’s interference into the market caused mal-investment by investors and consumers thus causing the housing bubble and then afterwards a massive crash causing the recession we now live in. (All predicted by free-market Austrian economists way before the crash)
What was the cause of our current economic crises? Answer: Government Interference and the FED. What did we witness the left wing do once the crash happened? Call for government takeovers, more government interference and regulation, and essentially blame capitalism for the mess… While those educated in Austrian economics could see that ‘big government’ was the cause all along.
If the federal government would stop printing money out of thin air and allow businesses to compete freely without excessive regulation as well as allow poorly run businesses to fail; the benefits of capitalism that made the United States the world economic power-house through the last 2 centuries would return like lightening. Freedom combined with capitalism is the greatest solution to poverty the world has ever seen. The history of America is proof to this fact.
Conclusion
My hope is that every American who loves our country, the Constitution, and what the founders created will join together and fight the ever increasing expanse of ‘big government‘. Unless the people demand their freedom and a return to Constitutional principles, the ‘Statists’ on the left will continue to push our country into a more debt, more government control, less prosperity, and less freedom. Essentially the beliefs of our founding fathers and dreams as outlined in the preamble of the Constitution will be gone forever. Liberty once fought, bled, and died for – will be lost.
