Freedom and Independence!

ADAMS 150x150 Freedom and Independence!The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more. ~ John Adams

It was on the 2nd of July, 1776 that the 2nd Continental Congress voted to approve a legal separation from the Kingdom of Great Britain and officially declare themselves free of British rule. Even though Congress legally instituted the Declaration on July 2nd, with many of the delegates not even signing it until August 2nd, we come to remember our freedom on July 4th, 1776 as the official celebration of Independence Day.

As I am writing this post, tomorrow is July 4th, 2009 and as a nation we will celebrate 233 years of independence and liberty. As free people, let us never forget what our founding fathers risked in order to provide for us and our children. As we celebrate this weekend, let us remember this day of deliverance as Adams did, “by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty”, and thank the Lord God Almighty for his blessings on this nation. May we always remember that this nation only preserves by his will, blessings, and power.

In addition, we must never forget that our founding fathers gave us a Republic, and through a Constitutional Republic the blessings of liberty can preserve and flourish. May the actions of our ancestors spur us on to teach our children and our fellow man the greatness of limited government and the liberty and prosperity it brings.

If you have not already done so, I recommend you take the time this weekend to read the Declaration of Independence. Through this document, and 56 signatures, our great nation was born.

Declaration1 244x300 Freedom and Independence!When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
